In the current economic climate, few of us have the kind of disposable income to indulge in expensive retail therapy. Gone are the days of twice-yearly shopping trips back to Blighty. And our love-affair with disposable fashion is failing too: That Primark skirt that ‘only’ cost 10€? It’s still a waste of 10€ if it only lasts a season. What we’re demanding now is value for money. So how do we look good whilst spending less?
First thing’s first – sort through your wardrobe for anything you can salvage. Well-loved pieces that no longer fit can be re-tailored: if the fabric’s still good, any expense here will be well worth it. Got expensive fashion mistakes? Then you’ll have great fabrics that you can get creative with! But don’t be too hasty with the scissors - that Missoni dress you bought in the ‘70’s could bring you a nice little windfall today.
Next, look at what’s missing in your wardrobe, and aim to replenish with classic pieces in natural fabrics. You’ll get far more wear out of a well fitting pair of jeans that suit your shape, than a trendier version you’ll soon regret. Be honest about your body shape and don’t keep things to slim into!
Now it’s time to shop. Get canny and you’ll find you can get the styles you love, and watch the pennies, by sourcing outlet stores. Some offer savings of up to 70%. The key with discount shopping is to use the outlets of shops you love anyway - this way you’re getting what you want at a fraction of the price, and not being seduced by ‘cheap-for-cheap’s-sake’.
And you should source retailers that have a strong history of good customer service. If they’re happy to provide an exchange on the basis of ‘I don’t like the colour…’ it gives you more options for making sure your purchase matches items you have at home.
You might have fewer euros in your pocket right now, but shop wisely and you can look better than ever!
